Week 3

Well, it turns out I really am cool, because I already had an account for RSS Feeds AND a Delicious account (although sadly with no bookmarks.) To fulfill this weeks assignment, I added some feeds & bookmarks tonight and it was like shopping online with someone else's credit card, I just couldn't stop. Who knew there were so many cool blogs out there- (especially from my own library)? I hope one of these assignments includes tips on keeping up with all the information we're now subscribing to- separating the wheat from the chaff, so to speak.
Over & out, H.

  1. Keeping up with all the information is tricky and I imagine, rather unique to each of us. No doubt, there are times in my job, where subscribing to a ton of literacy and children's literature blogs feels overwhelming (can you say 'mark all as read?') so it becomes a matter of constantly-shifting priorities. Because my busy-time in my job is Jan-April, very few of those blog posts were read. But during the summer and fall, when I'm gathering ideas of booklists, CE opportunities and programming suggestions - those blogs come in mighty handy. And having them right there for me to browse is a beautiful thing. I check out the title, if it looks interesting or appealing, I read on, if not, 'next post!'

And I also subscribe to lots of blogs and then delete them within weeks. Either they weren't what I thought they'd be, or they don't post enough for it to be worth it, or on the other hand, they post WAY too often for me to even think of keeping up with. So deciding what's 'wheat' and what's 'chaff' is pretty easy. Google has some great graphs and lists (click on 'trends' in the top left corner) that help you get a big picture of what you're reading, what you're not reading, and how often. So keeping an eye on what's working and what's not is easy!

  2. Those are all good suggestions, Kelley! We might want to think about adding some tips and tricks for staying current to the "rest week" portion, at least on the wiki.

H., you are totally cool. ;) You might want to think about trying one of the alternate services like Digg or StumbleUpon, too, just to see how they measure up. No pressure, though! ;)

  3. It would be great to have Kelley's tips posted! I have friends who like Digg, so I might try that, too. And, Holly, of course lots of us already knew you were cool.
